NSEL has built a strong practice advising central and local government, developers and iwi on legal issues concerning the coastal and marine environment. Examples of our work include:

• Prepared legal advice for Local Government New Zealand ("LGNZ") on the implications of the Marine and Coastal Area Bill for the administration of the coastal marine area by regional councils under the Resource Management Act 1991. NSEL's legal advice was circulated to the chief executives of all regional councils and formed the basis of submissions by LGNZ and a number of regional councils on the proposed Bill. The legal advice was tabled before the Maori Affairs Select Committee and led to amendments to the Bill.
• Prepared advice for the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment on the Fisheries Act 1996 as part of an on going investigation.
• Prepared legal advice for Northland Regional Council ("NRC") on Ninety Mile Beach Treaty settlement in respect of NRC's statutory powers and functions. This advice was particularly contentious, as it involved questions of natural justice and public interest.
• Counsel for the Surfbreak Protection Society Incorporated before the Board of Inquiry into the New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement 2010 ("NZCPS"). Successful in having seventeen regional surf breaks declared as nationally significant under Policy 16 of the NZCPS 2010.
• Advised the International Union for Conservation of Nature on provision under Fijian legislation for integrated coastal management and provided recommendations for legislative amendments and improved decision making.
